With personal problems on the horizon that might require her equipment to be at its very best; Layne used up some spare time to try and improve upon what she already had. Unfortunately, the plasma shield wasn't really something she fully understood. She might have to beg Baesal to get involved there; the grip on the darksaber though, well, she understood that *perfectly*. Enough to know how to make it even easier to wield than it already was for her.
