[Day 2 - Afternoon Slots] Thousand Word Poetry (Event)

Posted: Sun Jul 18, 2021 6:03 pm
by Dapper Dog
Event Type: Affection, Main
Participants: All
Timeslots: EA, MA, or LA

Description: The gardens are decorated with beautiful and lavish Panteer banners, and lining the walkway are Flags for all of the other Houses of Alderaan. Stages are setup all around the gardens decorated with flowers. Anyone that wishes to proclaim a poem may take to the stage and the best are rewarded with cheers and gifts, though some seek neither as they seek only the Affection of their chosen paramours!

Will you give voice to your romantic heart and proclaim it to the world?

Rules: Players have to make two choices, if they are going for Affection or Glory, please note that clearly. Next the player must decide if they are choosing to direct the poem at a specific person, this can be anyone but make it clear, or choose to speak of Romance in more general terms.

Pure Creation: The character tries to ponder the right subject or find the right words, this is an Education (Intellect) or Cool (Presence) at Average difficulty. If successful gain 1 Poetry point and every 3 Advantage gains another Poetry point, if they roll a Triumph they find the perfect inspiration and gain a free upgrade on the next check in the event. Every 2 Threat grants a setback die on the next check and a Despair upgrades the Difficulty by 1. If the roll is failed they can't find a great subject but can press forward.

Word Crafter: The character now puts words to datapad or in their mind, drawing from what they know and see of the world, this is a Charm (Presence) or Perception (Cunning) check at Hard. If the roll is failed they craft a terrible poem but can press forward.

The Charm roll is not being used against anyone so Force abilities or gear have no effect here, this affects Talents as well if there are questions ask but the answer is probably no.

All the World's a Stage: The character can take to the stage and give their poem to the world! They must command the stage or at least overcome their nerves to deliver their creation. This last check is a Leadership (Presence) or Discipline (Willpower) check at Average. If successful gain 1 Poetry point and every 3 Advantage gains another Poetry point, if they roll a Triumph they gain 2 Poetry points. Every 3 Threat reduces gained Poetry points by 1 and a Despair reduces the gained Poetry Points by 2.

This is delivered to a crowd made up of a a variety of people, Noble Regalia will not apply.

Rewards/Outcome: If a player gains 6 Poetry Points they can gain 1 Affection point or 1500 credits for Glory; if they gain 8 Poetry Points they gain a total of 2 Affection Points or a total of 3000 credits for Glory. There may be additional Affection gain or lost based on the approach of a direct poem or a general one.

Destiny Use: 1 for Each Suitor in the 3rd step (All the World's a Stage), upgrade the difficulty by 1.

GM's Note: Please post here and note which Afternoon slot you use, this event takes a whole time slot to compete.

Kat actually really liked poetry. And she had read several volumes of collected poetry from Alderaan and other places in the galaxy.

But actually writing her own poem as a challenge. Should she follow the rythm of stanzas used during the Alde-reign? Or the more whimsical construction of Organa-styled poetry five centuries ago? Oh kriff, it also had to be a love poem?

In her moments of indecision she at least made something that was... passable. It wasn't the masterpiece she had hoped for, but honestly they couldn't expect masterpieces to be created out of the blue in the span of an afternoon right?

Choosing to draw inspiration from their natural surroundings was probably a bad choice, as it didn't mesh too well with her chosen style of emotional Selkath-poetry... especially since there was a distinct lack of oceans and ocean-deeps and overall large bodies of water.

"There is a lady all dressed in light,
who stands above the jagged shore at night.
To guide the sailing ships to safer seas
and beg the wicked storms for calmer breeze.

She ever shines her light across the bay,
in hopeful search for love that sailed away.
He left the land with plans to bring back gold,
to ask her hand to wed, the story's told.

When his ship met with tempest gales,
the waves ripped the hull, wind stripped the sails.
The lady waits at night for him on shore,
as he still lays with gold on ocean floor.

Sometimes you see her lonely light afar,
it shines in the sky like a distant star.
"

The poem was kind of pretentious, and smacking of old-fashioned tropes. But at least no one could complain about her delivery.

A competition of poetry was something Tarlia found interesting. She wouldn't call herself a poet and had no real intention of joining in, just enjoying herself. But the myriad of poems stirred memories. One of those she had fought beside, Corporal Riead had been his name, had loved poetry...and she had come to realize hated soldiering. The exact circumstances of his joining the army had been a mystery to her, but the young man had shared his work with her on several occasions. One of which now sprang to her mind. It wasn't exactly a love poem, in fact it was in some manner parody of the life Riead had hated. But there was a longing in it, and that was in it's own way a love story.

So she took to the stage and delivered the young Corporal's last poem, for he no linger lived to do so....

"Today we have naming of parts. Yesterday,
We had daily cleaning. And tomorrow morning,
We shall have what to do after firing. But to-day,
Today we have naming of parts. Japonica
Glistens like coral in all of the neighbouring gardens,
And today we have naming of parts.

This is the lower sling swivel. And this
Is the upper sling swivel, whose use you will see,
When you are given your slings. And this is the piling swivel,
Which in your case you have not got. The branches
Hold in the gardens their silent, eloquent gestures,
Which in our case we have not got.

This is the safety-catch, which is always released
With an easy flick of the thumb. And please do not let me
See anyone using his finger. You can do it quite easy
If you have any strength in your thumb. The blossoms
Are fragile and motionless, never letting anyone see
Any of them using their finger.

And this you can see is the bolt. The purpose of this
Is to open the breech, as you see. We can slide it
Rapidly backwards and forwards: we call this
Easing the spring. And rapidly backwards and forwards
The early bees are assaulting and fumbling the flowers:
They call it easing the Spring.

They call it easing the Spring: it is perfectly easy
If you have any strength in your thumb: like the bolt,
And the breech, and the cocking-piece, and the point of balance,
Which in our case we have not got; and the almond-blossom
Silent in all of the gardens and the bees going backwards and forwards,
For today we have naming of parts."

Finally, he was ready to speak in a deep booming voice which easily spread across the gathered crowd.

"I never take anything for granted. Only a fool maybe takes things for granted. Just because it's here today, it can be gone tomorrow.
And that's one thing that you never in your life ever have to worry about me. If I'll ever change towards you because baby I love you
yeah I love you. Just the way you are"

Sando started accompanying his master on a small piano

"Don't go changing, trying to please me. You never let me down before. I don't imagine you're too familiar, and I don't see you anymore.
I would not leave you in times of trouble. We never could have come this far. I took the good times, I'll take the bad times. I'll take you just the way you are..."

And on he continued.

OOC: Going EA, looking for affection, trying for a poem directed towards Joran.

Jocasta felt out of her element as she walked through the gardens. She had been well educated and could manage to write a pleasing poem. This was a much easier task than clearing a killik hive or fighting on an Imperial invasion... right?

She pondered how best to express herself to Joran, deciding sincerity and a look to the future was the best approach.

Jocasta was not overly elegant with her words, but thinking of Prince Joran's personalty, decided not to try too hard to embellish and to let the words flow naturally.

Now came the easy part, delivering the poem. While others might balk at speaking in front of a large group, it was second nature to Jocasta. Perhaps it was that overconfidence that threw off some of the patrons.

I promise to be there for you always.
Whenever you need a helping hand,
I promise to think about you daily.
Wherever you are in the galaxy,
I promise to never let you down.
No matter what we go through,
I promise to keep you in my prayers
So that the Maker may keep you safe.
I promise to be here when you return.
I will be there waiting.
I promise to be your support
When you need it most.
I promise to help you through the tough times,
Even though it will hurt me.
I promise to be here for you when you are in pain,
Even though it will pain me too.
I promise to support you in any decisions you may make,
No matter what they are.
I promise to be there for you when decisions need to be made,
Even though it will kill me to watch you leave.
I promise I will be there to say goodbye
When you leave on your excursions.
I promise to be there to say hello again
When you return home to me.
I promise to love you forever and eternally,
No matter what happens or where life takes us.
I promise to be loyal to you while you are deployed,
Because I know that you will be loyal to me.
I promise that no matter where life takes me,
It will never take me away from you.
I promise to be here forever and always,
Trustworthy and in love,
Forever and always.
I promise.

by Riss
Finding the right words for a poem always felt hard, even when she wrote them under her mothers guidance when she was younger. It was her older sister that took to the lessons far quicker and more aptly than Riss. While Riss herself always got caught on the fun words, the ones that sounded nice or were funny to her. Eventually she learned the constructions, how to make them proper, but they almost never had a good guide for symbolism or anything that was truly respected among the poetry writers of the galaxy. All she had were the words she often relied on to get herself out of a jam. This time they were put down on paper, but figuring out clever ways to say something was always her forte.

Wanting to do something a little more fun, she finds a way to add in hints toward the little game that she set out when they first met. Very vague hints which would only give the broadest image of her life as it is, and as it was. Someone who was rather clever might be able to figure it out, while those who knew her certainly would. Meanwhile, those who weren't either of those could probably get a sense of some nebulous other person who seemed to be the point of view for the poem with vague details from their life mixed in to give the poem structure.

While the delivery wasn't jaw-dropping, Riss' ability to control the crowd was rather impressive. She had all the natural wit, charm, and grace when it came to the wordplay she'd written down to truly deliver it as it was meant to be delivered.

Delmi examined her datapad that afternoon with the news of this event.

What the fuuuuck? Poetry… Damn man… They wanna embarrass the shit out of me…

She leaned back in her chair and began to think of something to write…

Your gaze is like a pew…

No…

Your looks like a vibroknife…

Also no…

You have your own special way,
Of turning around my day.

Yeah… that’s some poetry shit there!

She worked the bulk of the afternoon perfecting her… presentation… wondering all along how in the world one was supposed to feel ‘love’ for somebody they talked to for 30 seconds. She’d never felt it in nearly 30 years of life… But she had to make it at least look like she was interested. All part of the game… though a different game than most the other people were playing.

She found herself in front of the group of people somehow…

Fuckin’ poetry… How am I supposed to read this drivel out loud… I’m Delmi Fuckin’ Koor…

“Hey everybody… Uhhm… I wrote this… Please listen.”

She then recited her poem:

You have your own special way
Of turning around my terrible day.
You make all the bad things go away
The second that you say hey.

And when I look into your eyes,
I see honesty with no disguise.
Just a glance at you makes my heartbeat rise.
I know for a fact that these feelings aren't lies.

If only you knew
How much my feelings for you pew… I mean… grew,
Maybe, just maybe, we could start something new,
And then I'd never feel blue.

Garth was not a writer, or a speaker, or much of anything socially, especially in the creative fields. It took him far, far too long to settle upon a topic for his poetry despite the extra time he had set aside.

(FAIL)

Despite the poor initial subject, the fact that it took Garth so long to choose a topic may have proven a boon, it didn't leave him enough time to overthink his creation. He sat down and the words just flowed from hand to datapad - he definitely didn't trust himself to try and memorize them.

For Miyi, Baroness of the Thul

Gliding through the air,
wings so colourful and bright,
A butterfly heads my way,
What a truly amazing sight!
Stripes so perfectly aligned,
Symmetrical and straight
Purple, Red and Gold,
Viewing one worth the wait.
A flower petal invite,
Enticing as it seems ,
resting for a moment,
as in my butterfly dreams.
Bathing in the suns glow,
A peaceful mood,
A butterfly landing,
an eager observer soothed.
Fluttering about,
A rhythm innately learned.
Effortless in flight,
Caterpillar to Butterfly turned.
Enlightening our world,
brightens a gloomy day.
Watching a butterfly,
dazzles onlookers to stay.

Chiss, believe it or not, enjoy artist endeavors. Their entire society is about burying their emotions in order to do what they must for the betterment of the Ascendency. They were not droids, however, so art was about one of the only culturally acceptable means in which they were given a outlet to express the emotions they were repressing within them. Many of their households were decorated with paintings and sculptures of fantastic quality.

While Nudimsu was no different in that he found art to be a outlet for himself, poetry was not something he particularly good at. The subject matter as well, love, was something he was not accustomed to, either. Maybe another subject matter could be found.

Thousand Word Poetry (Education): 3eA+3eD 2 failures
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Nope. Absolutely nothing comes to mind. Oh well, maybe looking around the world around him would assist him in this task.

Thousand Word Poetry (Perception): 1eP+2eA+3eD 0 successes, 3 threat
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Nope. Still absolutely nothing.

Well then, just some jibberish about the weather, then. Why did he sign up again? Well, time to get on the stage. He had a sort of bold move to possibly make this up for this travesty.

Standing up, he nodded his head and sighed deeply and, having no real other options to consider, decided to hide this horrid trash behind his Native tongue, so that no one would ever know what it was that he had came up with. Afterwards, he'd make sure to delete the file off his datapad to erase any evidence of its existence. No one must ever know of his shame.

"Ch'ah k'arcah ch'ah ch'ah; Vim veo Ch'ah rot'up vah hsr'ah rot'up..."

The bright side of all of this was that, surprisingly, it sounded quite interesting while speaking in Cheun. He hit the proper notes of his tongue, adding emphasis on words while reciting this shit-show of a poem and selling it like it was a golden brick. Even if anyone listening wouldn't understand a word of it, they would at least remember it being said with passion and emotion and hearing Cheun spoken was quite the whimsical experience.

The rhyming scheme was awful, but no one could tell such a thing. The comparison to the sun and the grass, terrible. But, what the humans heard sounded interesting, at least. If ever pressed about the words, he would simply nod his head and inform them that to translate it to Basic would remove the meaning. That would be enough to end the topic, and hopefully, the conversation itself. Still, it was clear that the majority of people were not happy about hearing something in a language they had no real means of understanding, much less being able to recite.

"K'ohn bah ch'eo tsut'r catrt'esim'i; Caf'i, g'en'bat, buzz'd ch'oscosah, ch'acah- csibev, retvi- k'iban, vsus'a vim ven'nasomu'isb..."

And so Nudimsu continued on until the end, with the sound of a few polite claps ushering him on his way off the platform and back into (hopeful) silence once more.

After helping out in the soup kitchen Breela stumbles onto the poets in the gardens. She smiles and listens to some of the poetry, even deciding to share one of her own. Spending the Early Afternoon revising, and mustering up enough courage to take the stage.

She steadies her nerves and reads:

"As fall sets the forests ablaze
And red grow the waters that sparkled so green
The moon casts her weary gaze
At thee in the hollows that rustle between

Where starlight meet billows, and soft are your pillows
Sleep my sweet darlings, curl up at your ease
The storm did not wake thee, nor shadows take thee
You sleep in the arms of the slow swinging seas
Sleep in the arms of the slow swinging seas"

She wipes a tear from her eyes and leaves quietly.

There were plenty of Republic types around so Veeone attended as per his primary programming directive to protect Republic interests. Stating they were here to represent the Republic was misconstrued as entrance to the event though, which left a very misunderstood droid standing before the crowd with its processors whirring as it searched its databanks for a worthwhile entry.

It had spoken before hundreds of droids in the Metallic Unity before. It had strode into combat against Sith, Mandalorians, Gank Raiders and all other enemies of the Republic. Surely it had some stirring poetic speech stored away, didn't it?

Durasay was also a man who enjoyed the arts. While not a performer, per se, he understood what it took to give a proper performance.

His thoughts drifted as he pondered his muse, and there was something there. A pang upon his heartstrings, a flash of crimson in memory. His lips formed a hard line, as he began to write.

It was a terrible poem. Perhaps marred by the ache of uncertainty, it certainly wasn't anything that would garner publication, even as the muse was clear as day.

Still, his performance was Commanding. As a leader of beings, as a former Senator, he knew how to work the stage. Appropriate, given his muse, that darkness laced his words, even as he didn't use it. He bowed, then left the stage.

Gil wasn't much of a poet, in fact he wasn't really a poet at all. His sister would likely equate his artistic sense and skill to that of a womp rat, in fact he was pretty sure she had at least once... Probably more then that honestly. Still part of having fun at a event like this was to throw your hat in with some odd events and hope nothing strange came up it.

Still love wasn't really a subject he was an expert in and it was a stretch for him to try and all he could think of to equate it to was his like of ice cream. All thirty one flavors he had tried from the local spot near his home when he was but a boy. IT was an odd choice, and people really didn't get it at least at first.

He did manage to turn the tide though, somethig about strawberry flavored kisses caught peoples attention if not their hearts, and just how the nuttiness of walnut flavor could capture just how craxy love could be.

He delivered it well too, even if not especially inspiring, but with dignity and perhaps even a bit of grace. Even if he thought he might need a drink after standing in front of a crowd like this.

He was never afraid of the public, but he also knew this wasn't his strong point. But even if he was not going to do well, he figured it was worth it to present himself as appreciating the traditions of Alderaan.

And so he calmed his mind and came up with something to share. His Sith sensibilities fed into it a little, but likely in a way that most would not have expected. The tone was... risque to say the least as well, but he was unapologetic even if many kind of looked away and blushed at the insinuations and suggestions made. But through it all he felt no embarrassment himself. He presented a confident and proud demeanor for all to see. Not to mention that it was a very direct analogy representative of the festival.

"We stand in the garden of life..." blah, blah, blah
"I bury my face in the flower of..." blah, blah, blah
"With unchained passion and desire..." blah, blah, blah
"Dripping with the nectar of..." blah, blah, blah
"And our future is the fruit bore forth."

As someone that does not make a great number of public appearances, this may answer why. There are probably many more that see it as scandalous than not, and the quality of the poem leaves something to be desired, but it is an unadulterated look into the mind of one that has experienced great romantic and physical love and feels both with a great deal of fervor.

Cynella watched the crowd go by. Despite herself, she'd been feeling a bit out of sorts in terms of fitting in among the Alderaanian nobility. Surely Kuati weren't so different? I suppose I am being asked to potentially marry into this society for the rest of my life...

Nonetheless, she wrote with her heart some pretty words onto her datapad. Maybe she'd been a bit too bold with her proclamations that a foreign rose looks all the sweeter in another garden.

When the time came for her to present her piece, her magnanimous personality overwrote any such concerns. Indeed, she was apparently endearing to the crowd even if she didn't stand out with her delivery.

(Using MA)

It didn't take Niall long to come up with a subject. Since he was a child, he'd loved Alysele Cortess. That love had changed over time, growing, deepening, involving a lot more costumes. He could think of any number of things he wanted to write about her, and most of them were even fit for public consumption outside of Jerri's writing. That was the easy part.

Actually writing... Niall sweat and strained as he considered. He was used to giving clear strong speeches to soldiers. Or, at least, those expecting to hear from soldiers. Metaphors were tricky. But not impossible. As he wrote, Niall found himself writing faster, and his deep frown turned into a thoughtful smile.

And then it came time to perform...

"Love... is a many splendored thing." Niall began. "Love lifts you up where you belong! All you need is love!" Niall smiled his earnest, open smile at the audience. He wasn't used to reading poetry. But, darn it, didn't Captain Alderaan just look adorable up there on stage reading his poetry?

With an enthusiastic gesture, Niall's datapad slipped from his hand. "I'm sorry. One moment." Smiling cheerfully, Niall turned and bent to pick it up.

The crowd was attentive as he turned back, although Niall found himself wondering why so many of them suddenly had their cameras out...

Aurilie felt rather out of practice with her poetry, especially considering that it was one of those things that the family did during days of heavy snowfall. She didn't have very pleasant memories of those days when everyone was trapped in the same room and forced to utilize their creative muscles in order to earn their freedom from their self-imposed cabin prison...

She supposed some memorable work was conjured from those occasions, admittedly. Perhaps the exercise was mean to yearn for creative freedom when trapped with family. At least, that's what she was going to tell herself after becoming an adult and wanting to put those torturous poetry sessions behind her. Once she forced her mind on crafting a poem, it did veer toward the thought of snow, admittedly.

Using that bit of inspiration, her poetry offering was...

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

But I will not be going near,
Not now, not this year,
It is too far of a leap,
Perhaps, once the snow is clear.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

After a pleasant morning in the gardens the subject was of course flowers! Their ephemeral beauty. The warmth of feeling they evoked. The sweet smell and glorious colour. And of course he was going to dedicate his work to Princess Jameela, she was the reason he was here.

It all started so well. Obviously flowers were a good metaphor for life, love, blah blah blah. Good grief it was hard work writing this stuff. Flowers. Flowery. Metaphor. Something something Princess. He scratched his head. Hmm, go with what you know?

Kellen's poem became an excellent example of why Academic discourse is not the subject of bardic or artistic celebration. It would have made an excellent journal article. It had references. It had footnotes. It even had a series of delightful figures (Kellen could sketch rather exquisitely). As a poem though... Well at least the novelty would keep the audience amused. It was difficult to distract them all from reminiscing about the Captain's, er, display anyway.

Then of course one had to deliver the actual poem. It had been a wee while (cough, decade) since the Professor had last been anywhere near an Alderaanian poetry recital. He had, however, spent plenty of time on Coruscant recently, and they were very much into both freestyle jizz and spoken word versions of rap songs...

At the end of the day Kellen could say he was the only being to have ever given a spoken word version of a poem written in the style of an academic report. He even interpretive danced the figures. Occasionally words rhymed. No one was entirely familiar with the type of thing they seeing. Strangest of all? It was not even the worst performance of the day.
