[Day 8 - MA] Dueling Hydrobanjos

by Dapper Dog
The garden was a scene of gruesome duels, duels of musical beauty! Often when paramours quarreled over the target of their affections, they would challenge the other to a great duel! But such things should not be violent, no they have proven their devotion in words and now was a time to do so by song and dance!

The garden was field with young and old lovers and faire goers dancing or playing an instrument often challenging another to song with the traditional instrument called the Bandzul, a stringed instrument that could play with a bow or with the fingers. It was best to create in the moment especially when one challenges another.

Of course, if one does not have or does not want to play a bandzul then they could employ dance to challenge their rival and prove they are the better choice. Often players and dancers wear necklaces of flowers or incorporate flower petals into their dance as is custom.

Once can simply dance or play without challenging a rival but that is considered uncouth, or unlucky. So go forth young lovers and prove your affections through song and dance!

OOC: Players can make an Average check using Education (Intellect), Cool (Presence), or Coordination (Agility) to play an instrument. If a player chooses to dance, they can make an Athletics (Brawn), Coordination (Agility), or Charm (Presence) check, equipment does not modify these rolls and Force is frowned upon as in poor spirit of the event. If the Force is used increase the difficulty to Daunting. How do they know… who knows but it just does not feel right.

Galen looked a bit uncomfortable as he picked up the instrument and looked at everyone watching.

"This is an open challenge, for anyone who wishes to show their feelings for Princess Jameela Panteer."

The song he played was light and almost childlike. Others might provide a better performance, but Galen was pleased. It felt like it conveyed his feelings well. Most of them, at least.

Jocasta made her way through the gardens, ignoring the other performers and making her way to Prince Joran.

As he began to play, she moved with the music. It was a clumsy attempt, maybe it was the flower lei flapping around her neck and in her face or maybe it was her unfamiliarity with the bandzul beat. While she had intended to stake a claim and drive off any rivals, she was anything but intimidating. But, Prince Joran seemed amused by her efforts, so she kept it up and let loose the moves.

Galen wasn't the only one offering Bandzul challenges in honour of Princess Jameela today. Professor Rist had picked up an instrument and got to work.

"In honour of the Princess with a heart of gold."

He began playing a fun tune that got increasingly more and more complicated until eventually, after a few minutes his fingers were flying and...TWANG!!!

...one of the strings snapped under his vigorous attention. "Oh, bother!"

Bandzul. Even as a member of royalty in a rural region of Alderaan, she found the music from the instrument a little too rural for her tastes. There was something that didn't exactly strike it as classical or traditional enough to be adopted by House Alde as a whole. It was something of an acquired taste, for anyone. While she could try her hand at the instrument, she perhaps felt a bit more confident in paying tribute to it with a dance. She would tap her feet along to the beat to get her bearings at first, eventually dancing in tandem to create a beat rather than follow along with it. While she did well enough, something in her couldn't shake the shudder that she looked really goofy dancing like that. Hopefully, this will never come up in polite conversation.

Riss was tired, emotionally drained, and ultimately exhausted but one wouldn't know that from the bright smile she wore as she danced among the others. Wearing a lovely light colored dress with a green skirt, a lily necklace, and other flower adornments with the exception of a crown she was a rare sight to be seen. There was no need to continue to stress, as she saw it, waiting for the clock to tick down and so she lost herself utterly in the moment here. Challenging 'rivals' as it were in the fun spirit of the dance but her head was elsewhere. For a time, she even split off for her own delight to incorporate a friend or two into her own dance and in but a moment flitted away once more.

There was, of course, something missing here.. was it the hollowness of her merriment?

Khaji had taught her how to play guitar when they first met. While he hadn't been famous, not even on that little backwater, he still was good. So good that he made his living from it. She was no where near as good as him, but she took to it all the same. Hearing the strange instruments reminded her of how much fun she used to have playing.

After a time she decided to try her hand at the bizarre instrument. Not really knowing what to do with the bow she instead took to figuring out the fret board. Eventually coming into a strumming pattern that felt natural.

Playing the Bandzul (Cool/Coordination): 2eP+1eA+2eD 1 success

She was mildly successful and spent the rest of the timeslot strumming away on 'four chord' pop songs.

For the moment at least Gil merely clapped along to some of the songs he enjoyed. He wasn't much of a player and even less of a dancer. Well, at least when it could be avoided.

Still it seemed like Kellen at least was having a fine time.

The woman had her own instrument, lovingly cared for and then marched up to Gil and said, “This man is worthy of my desires, and any who wish to take him from me know that my designs are genuine. Let any that wish to say otherwise challenge my skill. For he is Master Corren, the name means spear bearer, and I shall bear his spears with pride.”

And then she played focusing her eyes on her spear-bearer.

Once finished she said, “All your fears are mine now, Master Corren.”

Perhaps Aurilie's fabricated inner doubts over her dancing skills prevented her from getting lost in the festivities and focused on who was there exactly. She raised her brows when she saw a headful of pink hair. Making her way over to Riss, she would hook and arm with her and take her for a spin as if she was her dancing partner, tapping her feet to the instrument.

She would muster a false smile while whispering through her teeth. "Riss!"

You look like hell. Aurilie gaze said very much to Riss what she was thinking.

Blai seemed somehow less easygoing and merry as he got to the garden, despite the music, that he'd usually love and was actually tapping his fingers to unwittingly. It was hard to say why, but between the songs getting to him, the people dancing... and an overeager Elur doing something odd that could perhaps be described as lupine tap-dancing, he let a smile grow into his face again. Seeing Galen and Kellen issuing challenges over Jameela, he got a Bandzul of his own. Minor House or not, outdoorsman or not, his training had included music lessons, as for many of the nobles. So, after feeling Kellen's melody for a while, he started playing along with him, complementing his complicated tune and challenging him back with his additions.

Then, seeing the archaeologist's string suddenly snapping, he started, but soon winked at him, and went for a counterpoint over the melody they'd had done so far - which worked quite well, covering for the lack of Kellen's instrument, and inviting him to play comments on the double-line he'd set up as he first nodded to the Rist, then looked around, seeing Elur yapping cheerfully....

...and then Riss dancing. Well as always, but... somehow something seemed wrong?

He managed to keep his fingers moving and feel the song enough to make it to the end of a respectable show, but it lost some of its brightness as it neared the end - as if his own spirit wasn't fully in it anymore. His eyes shifted around the crowd, as if looking for something that might be the matter, then to Jameela and Lana by her side, then to Elur again... and back to Riss. He didn't quite remember seeing her like this before... well, before last night.

He should probably talk to her again...

Nudimsu saw everyone dancing and witnessed everything going on. He didn't want to wear flowers, but he figured it would just as good to show what he could do. The music was hard to read on the pace, so it was not his finest work, but he still managed to keep to the beat, matching the tempo and the pace with his own creative flair. Slipped up once or twice, but otherwise it was a successful attempt.

He wasn't dancing for the attention of the princess, though, even if it was in front of her. Just for himself. If she or anyone else liked it, that was their own prerogative.

Music. It helped calm the nerves. She had never been much of a musical performer herself, not like the likes of Lyseil Panteer. Kat had had the chance to listen to one of her recitals on Coruscant once.

But she knew how to play the bandzul at least. And her selection of tunes was a testament to the fine Alderaanian education she had had, playing such merry tunes of old; Star Above The Garter, Monaghan's Jig, and Water Under The Keel. Old folk tunes from long ago.

The was rather sudden and more then a little unexpected, and gil blinked his cheeks going a bit pink but otherwise his expression remained rather even. Still as the woman finished he clapped, and dipped his head in thanks at the masterly crafted song.

"As you wish, Lady Panteer." Was his simple reply to her words.

Cynella sported an acoustic guitar and appeared to be much in her element here. After many weekends spent hanging out under trees at university, she had better possess this talent. "Aly! In the spirit of today's festivities, I must inform you of your impending doom!"

And then... STRUMMING TIME.
