The Parliament of Alderaan has two houses , a House of Lords and the Lower House. The House of Lords is appointed by the various houses, Greater Houses get more seats and lesser houses get less seats. The Lower House is by democratic vote by region, each House conducts their own election among the common folk though it’s pretty similar across the planet and territories.

Usually a person contacts their local Lord to say they wish to run, this is not needed but considered a courtesy. Any citizen can run, but having the blessing of the local House tends to help. Then they run for the position and if elected can serve a term of six years with a max term limit of two in either House.

It should be noted that it takes a unanimous vote from both Houses to veto a Royal Command, and that the Queen has full permission to veto any ruling of Parliament though rarely done as it tends to drive the Houses away from the Crown. In general the rule of law is that the Queen is kept abreast of legislation and anything she does not like just gets buried before hitting the floor.

While the House of Lords is almost all human, the Lower House does have other species serving on it.
