Padawan Problems [D7, ME]

Post by Layne Hoshin » Wed Aug 04, 2021 4:25 pm

Ever since Nar Shaddaa and rescuing Daz and the other slaves at the site of that force wound, Layne had built herself a network of ex-slaves and slave-liberators; creating a loose-organization that covertly; and sometimes overtly; rescued slaves from Imperial and Hutt space; giving them as much help as they needed before they got resettled on various worlds. Delaya was one such world, one that Layne and her powerbase had used many times to resettle people on. Tyche herself was supposed to have been one of them, in fact, if not for her Force sensitivity being discovered, cutting her stay short.

Now, Layne thought that it was perhaps time to show the girl that her master did a lot more than just look scary and hurt people. It was one thing to just tell her, and another to show, after all. Not just Layne, of course, but the Jedi as a whole. They could not be everywhere; and with her training among the order happening during the war, she might be forgiven for thinking that was what the Jedi were all about.

So, she had made some calls. Set up something of a tour with some of her people. See how people were being helped in ways that didn't just involve waving lightsabers around.

And here they were; arriving just now and hopefully meeting those people.

Baesal had known Layne for a long time now. Sure, it was about a decade...but it seemed so much longer then that. She could'nt say that Layne had been as close a friend as Moyr and yet they had shared a longer history together: They were and still are very different people both in interest and temperament but there was few people in the galaxy that Baes trusted more or had more faith in then her and that despite what people still thought of the black wearing jedi.

Moments like these were why

Despite the vestiges of her gruff demeanor Layne never was a passive player: She acted how she saw fit to change the galaxy for the better.

Baesal walked silently following Layne to her destination

Their respective padawans followed along as they entered the neighborhood where many of the ex-slaves had been relocated to. It was a nice area with lots of bright lights as it was nearing midnight but the city-planet of Delaya did not sleep.

"So... this is where you would've ended up, if not for your connection to the Force..."

Showing was easy. Explaining the stuff she was showing was a little more awkward.

"...not bad, right? It's a little later than I would've liked but... I'm sure there's still people awake. Right? Let's go find someone."

Tyche followed along as they found lots of people still awake some were doing work around the apartment buildings others were just going about their lives. It was peaceful and homely. Tyche observed and was glad to see that the people were doing well, thriving even.

She was surprised to see Old Sully sitting on a bench feeding the lizard-birds, they ate anything and didn’t seem all that afraid of people. Old Sully was one of the older slaves, a sullustan who had a gentle toothy smile and was glad to see the young padawan.

Layne hadn´t always been great about staying involved after the fact; especially early on in these endeavors; she mostly just liberated them, directly or indirectly, sent them on their way, and then moved on to the next batch. Quantity over quality or something along those lines. The more slaves taken out of servitude and into freedom the better, afte rall. But in more recent years she's made an *effort* to pay a bit more attention. Remember actual names, check in from time to time where it felt appropriate to do so.

It wasn't possible to do so with all of them of course, but perhaps the sullustan was one of them. Either way, she followed in behind Tyche as she approached the ex-slave, and Layne gave him a nod while letting Tyche take the initiative in conversation. She seemed to know him better, after all.

Tyche and the old man had a good conversation catching up and she seemed to open and be surprised to hear that her friends were in school and learning trades and just doing every day things. She seemed very thankful and after about fifteen minutes she was pleased with how things were going.

She said to Layne, “I heard that things were going well but it’s hard to imagine that without seeing it.”

Baesal followed quietly, observing the neighborhood of the freed slaves and glancing at Daz from time to time.

"Sometimes we need to be reminded of how things can be," she said with a nod, "Especially when we keep seeing examples of how things shouldn't be."

She gestured around her. "This is why we do the things we do. Why I train you the way I do. These people aren't like you or me. They might be able to pick up a blaster when bad things start happening to them and those around them, but they're not trained soldiers. And even soldiers can't do the kinds of things we can do through our training and connection to the Force. If it comes to it, most of them would just end up getting hurt, or back in slavery, or worse. But people like us, can fight in their stead. Fight so that they never have to be threatened again."

Layne looked around herself as well, as she continued. "I don't really know how to do much else. I've been fighting since I was not even half your age. And if I'm not doing that, I'm scaring or angering people to force some kind of resolution that helps achieve... well... this sort of thing right here. You're good at that too. And I know you don't want to be. And the fact you don't actually want to, is part of the reason why I think you're better suited for it than I am. Helps make sure you do things for the right reasons, keeps you reflecting on yourself. Ultimately you're going to make your own path. Your own way of doing things. Maybe it'll be similar to mine. Maybe it'll be something completely different. But whatever you do, and whatever *we* do while you're my padawan, just remember... this is why we do the things we do."

She frowned a little, "I... don't like speeches! I just... having a padawan makes me feel like I should, you know, say more stuff than I normally do."

Tyche gave her a dubious look.

"Baesal, Daz," she said, giving them a pleading look, "tell her I don't like speeches."

''Mmmmh'' Baesal began scratching her chin suspiciously ''MMMMMMMH''

She grinned wide

''Not usually...but who know maybe it'll become your new thing?''
